I have followed the exposing of dismal, semi-slave conditions that almost of the people who work in the sweatshops of the global south experience.
It always saddens me to observe the chain of exploitation.
First, their countries were exploited by some form of western colonisation. And now by a second wave of ‘hidden’ colonisation, where their cheap labour is exploited by the western fashion houses through their local employers. Those local employers clearly get the lion’s share of the money provided by those fashion houses.
A fashion supply chain code sounds like an excellent idea, and I definitely support it.
I certainly support a proper and effective oversight process to protect the rights of the people who actually create the wealth in this world, the workers themselves.
