I am very pleased to hear about the breaking news that British citizen Shaker Aamer will be released from Guantanamo Bay. He is the last Briton to be detained there despite never being brought to trial after his arrest in 2001.
I attended an all-party delegation to Washington, in May of this year, which demanded his release. The pressure mounted by the British parliament contributed to today’s decision, but we must recognise the steadfastness of his family and the commitment of all those who campaigned for his release, whether they lobbied their MPs or demonstrated on the streets outside parliament against this clear injustice.
This is a hugely important development.
